"I came across Dimitri while doing a desperate online search at 3am for anyone who could help with the insomnia which was threatening to drive me round the proverbial bend. I called Dimitri the following day and explained the situation and he immediately made a good impression by listening, responding with kindness and empathy, and booking me in for an assessment. Throughout our sessions, Dimitri was positive, compassionate and friendly. He is clearly highly intelligent and knowledgeable but also very accessible and he has a good sense of humour. My sleep is far from perfect and some nights are better than others but on the whole, I sleep. I am no longer trying to survive in a sleep-deprived, anxious and distressed state and I can function again. “Having been a poor sleeper for most of my adult life (I’m now in my early forties), but never been worried about it, that changed after some poor health. Believing that a lack of sleep was holding me back from the full potential of my recovery, I was told about Sleep Well Oxford.
The initial consultation and subsequent follow ups were helpfully held on the phone and video call, so travel was no issue. Dr Gavriloff’s excellent bedside manner (how appropriate for the subject) made our weekly sessions something I would look forward to, as they were a good mixture of assistance in searching for the reasons behind poor sleep in the past, almost all of which can be attributed to poor sleep discipline, and praise for sticking to the programme. The course I followed was methodical, simply laid out, self administered and easy to understand, and the benefits were quick to reveal themselves. I didn’t say easy. Since the first step was wanting to help myself, I was determined to get through the early parts, which required some will power.
Now, with a better routine now established and an understanding of the principles, but still with some steps to achieve, I’ve been given my independence, but with the option of contacting Dr Gavriloff at any time for advice or reassurance. “After 18 months, I was desperate to escape the dreaded Zopiclone tablets that are said to alleviate insomnia. Luckily, I was eventually introduced to the psychologist, Dr Dimitri Gavriloff.
My initial Skype interview with Dimitri relieved any initial anxiety I had and I quickly took to his positive but friendly approach,. He described the function of circadian rhythms and their interaction with the brain, all in a simple vocabulary that I could follow. From there he described the training program and how it was integrated with recent scientific research into sleep problems and treatment. Finally, the weekly chart was explained that I would be required to complete each morning. It is incredible that after 6 weeks, I now sleep on average up to seven hours per night. The lifting of anxiety has improved my mental outlook. On reflection, I do wonder at the simplicity of the program - all that is required from the patient is tenacity!
